According to United States Secretary of State Mike Pompeo, Latin American countries should beware of China’s efforts to entrap them in debt through massive public-works projects.
He recently told Latin American leaders that “When China comes calling it’s not always to the good of your citizens.”
Pompeo’s predecessor, Rex Tillerson, had also warned that the region “does not need new imperial powers.”
Needless to say, China’s government and media are quite unhappy with the U.S. attitude, claiming that the American narrative is an attempt to “drive a wedge” between China and Latin America as trade between the two regions grows.
