Thousands of impoverished women sterilized

After sitting on the charges for 14 years, Peru’s attorney general has formally accused jailed former President Alberto Fujimori and three of his health ministers of a program of forced sterilization between 1996 and 2000.

A total of 2,166 women have alleged that they were given tubal ligatures without their consent and without understanding the consequences.

Many allege serious medical complications.

The Health Ministry’s Family Planning Program carried out 272,028 tubal ligatures and 22,004 vasectomies during this period, primarily of rural, poor, indigenous Quechua speakers.

It is unknown how many were coerced or poorly informed on what was happening to them.

The case now moves into a period of further investigation by the Peruvian judiciary.
