Serial killer — or something worse?

Is the “Monster of Ecatepec” truly an unrepentant self-confessed serial killer who, with his partner, murdered a slew of young women in a working-class commuter enclave of Mexico City?

Or is the couple covering for organized crime in the feminicide capital of Mexico?

Lurid news coverage of the confessed crimes of Juan Carlos and Patricia Hernandez has inspired the “Not Even One More” (#niunamas) hashtag campaign in a society exhausted by the sky-high rates of unsolved murders of women.

Yet some activist wonder if the couple are covering for drug gangs and human traffickers that systematically victimize women.

They say that allegedly complicit law enforcement can create a media spectacle of looking heroic and catching the bad guys — without actually moving against criminal networks operating in Ecatepec and around the nation
