Along the “Maya Riviera,” sea-turtle nesting beaches are endangered by development of luxury resort hotels, and nowhere more so than in rapidly growing Tulum (Quintana Roo state).
However, in a major victory for the turtles, Mexico’s federal environmental agency has refused to authorize a new development that encroaches on the Xcacel-Xcacelito Bay, the largest nesting site on the Yucatan Peninsula for endangered green, loggerhead and hawksbill sea turtles.
