Up until her last day — March 23, 2017 — Miroslava Breach never compromised her ideals as a truth-telling journalist in Chihuahua, Mexico.
Like over 20 other journalists in her state in recent years, she met a violent end at the hands of the criminals she profiled, paying the ultimate price for the many bombshell investigations she published in newspapers such as La Jornada.
She is now the subject of an exhaustive journalistic investigation into the facts surrounding her assassination.

Though the immediately culpable parties are known, and the actual assassin jailed, questions persist about collaboration between drug traffickers, politicians and others who may have decided together to silence her.
Breach was a legend in the Sierra Tarahumara — the Copper Canyon region — and particularly among the poor, downtrodden and marginalized.
A native of the region, she exposed not only the influences of organized crime but also the environmental and social disasters brought about by large infrastructure projects, illegal logging and violations of the rights of indigenous peoples.
