China’s southern inclination

With an eye to work abroad, Chinese students are taking up Spanish and Portuguese, as China’s fascination with Latin American culture grows in tandem with the country’s burgeoning economic (and thus diplomatic) presence in the region.

The phenomenon is part of China’s rapidly expanding global footprint, which has the United States deeply concerned.

The U.S. has traditionally regarded Latin America as firmly within its own political and economic sphere of influence.
