As the Amazon rainforest burns with historic ferocity, a strange alliance of ecological advocates and industry is forming to confront the inflammatory rhetoric of Brazil’s President Jair Bolsonaro.

At a meeting in Sao Paulo, Brazil, representatives from the industrial-agriculture sector joined with ecological-advocacy groups to protest the increased deforestation of the Amazon this year.

Worried by Brazil’s deteriorating international image and the threat of economic damage from international boycotts of Brazilian goods, companies that export meat, cacao and that run sustainable cattle ranches made common cause with advocacy groups such as the Institute for Amazonian Research and the rainforest-conservation group Imazon.

This new alliance aims to create a message of unity to inspire Brazilian government and society.

Their shared enemies are the numerous illegal operations responsible for deforestation and setting wildfires.

The group maintains that economic production and environmental preservation can occur together.
